Every major leap in human civilization has been accompanied by a profound convergence of technology and art. From the totemic patterns forged in ancient bronze, to the Renaissance development of perspective alongside breakthroughs in anatomy, and then to the algorithmic redefinition of artistic expression in the digital age, the symbiotic relationship between technology and art has served as a dual engine of human progress.

Artificial intelligence is now reshaping the operating logic of human society at an unprecedented pace. As one of the principal driving forces of the new industrial revolution, AI is not only rebuilding the foundations of traditional industries such as manufacturing, healthcare and finance, but also accelerating the growth of emerging fields including the metaverse, smart cities and digital twins.

In art and design, this convergence is advancing exponentially. AI tools can already generate compositions, coordinate colors and even create narratives independently. By significantly lowering the barriers to artistic creation, these technologies are unleashing creativity on a much broader scale, allowing people without professional training to produce distinctive works of art through simple prompts.

The impact of AI on artistic creation and the design industry is potentially transformative. According to a 2024 NVIDIA industry report, AI tools have increased productivity in game-art production by 120 percent, enabling a single artist to undertake a volume of foundational work that would once have required a team of 100 people.

Wearable technologies are turning the human body into a real-time interactive “digital canvas,” while virtual avatars are dissolving the boundary between physical and digital reality and reshaping social and cultural symbols. AI is also enabling designers to move beyond the limitations of traditional media and express themselves more freely through virtual reality, interactive installations and other emerging formats.

AI is rewriting the fundamental rules of artistic creation, bringing the ideal that “everyone can be an artist” within reach.

Imagine an artist wearing a laboratory coat. There is no need to struggle with color selection, because an algorithm can extract the patterns of Vincent van Gogh’s brushstrokes in The Starry Night and transform them into a dynamic digital sculpture. There is no need to agonize over composition, because a neural network can reorganize chaotic sketches into geometric patterns reminiscent of Piet Mondrian.

This is not a scene from a science-fiction film. It echoes the real-world experiments of AARON, the pioneering computer-based art system developed by Harold Cohen in the 1970s. Capable of observing its environment and using algorithms to generate abstract artworks, the system produced works that attracted significant attention in the art market, with one selling at Sotheby’s for US$43,000. It also sparked a worldwide debate over whether machines could possess creativity.

Cohen himself offered a thought-provoking response: “AARON taught me that true creativity comes from breaking through constraints.”

Today, when we use Python to recreate elements of AARON’s creative framework, we discover that algorithms are not simply cold, impenetrable black boxes. Their process of learning from vast collections of artworks is, in essence, a reverse engineering of human aesthetic logic.

It is similar to analyzing millions of images associated with Van Gogh to construct a model mapping color to emotion, or using mathematical formulas to deconstruct humanity’s instinctive preference for the golden ratio. Brushstrokes that appear random are, in fact, statistical interpretations of color, composition and emotion derived through tens of thousands of iterations.

AI is expanding the boundaries of human artistic expression while renewing a fundamental question: What is art?

AI for Good and Sustainable Development: A Call for Collective Action

AI is a capability. Using it “for good” is a choice.

Through algorithms, AI can simulate certain human cognitive functions and, in some fields, even outperform human beings. Beauty and goodness, however, belong to the realm of values.

As a technology and a tool, AI is inherently neutral. Its applications reflect human intentions and values.

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 associated targets set out in the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development represent a global consensus and embody humanity’s shared aspirations for the common good. The Agenda makes clear that technological innovation must serve social inclusion and ecological balance.

AI is assuming an increasingly important role in this process. It is opening new pathways for global sustainable development and has already become a significant force in addressing worldwide challenges such as hunger, climate governance and the protection of cultural heritage.

In the near term, AI’s contribution to sustainable development is likely to be particularly significant in two areas: AI-driven scientific discovery, or AI for Science, and AI-enabled educational equity, or AI for Education.

UNESCO’s 2023 Global Education Monitoring Report found that the use of AI-powered speech-recognition systems in sub-Saharan Africa increased children’s literacy rates by 34 percent, helping overcome the long-standing shortage of qualified teachers. Experience in China has likewise demonstrated that AI can increase access to high-quality educational resources by more than 40 percent, underscoring the technology’s potential to narrow the digital divide.

The relationship between AI and the Sustainable Development Goals is not, however, as straightforward as it may appear. The sustainable development of AI requires a robust ethical framework. Research indicates that AI could contribute positively to approximately 80 percent of the SDG targets, while potentially having adverse effects on 35 percent of them.

The development of AI should therefore follow three principles of technology for good:

— Put people first. The development and application of AI should place the well-being of humanity at its core and adhere to fundamental ethical principles, including respect for human dignity, the advancement of fairness and justice, and the protection of environmental sustainability.

— Prioritize vulnerable groups. AI technologies must serve everyone, while efforts should be made to minimize digital exclusion and address deficits in access, skills and resources.

— Strengthen international cooperation. Only coordinated global action can effectively address the cross-border challenges created by AI.

Only by closely integrating technological innovation with inclusion and sustainable development can society prevent the widening of technological divides and the intensification of algorithmic bias. This integration provides a practical path for turning the principle of AI for good into meaningful action.

Art Education in the Age of AI: Crossing Disciplinary Boundaries

AI is compelling educators to reconsider how future artists and designers should be trained.

Traditional art education emphasizes manual skills, embodied experience, individual expression and cultural inheritance. It typically relies on physical media and linear creative processes. AI-oriented art education, by contrast, is built around algorithmic thinking and technological tools. It emphasizes human–machine collaboration, the expansion of creative boundaries, digital data and rapid iteration.

The future of art education will therefore be hybrid. It will move beyond the training of individual skills toward the integrated development of interdisciplinary thinking, human–AI collaboration and ethical judgment.

By combining the depth of traditional artistic techniques with the breadth of AI technologies, this new model can cultivate creators who are able to work across different disciplines, media and modes of thought.

The publication of the Central Academy of Fine Arts’ New Logic of Artificial Intelligence in Art and Design series comes at a critical moment in the global transformation of art education.

The first group of six AI+ textbooks comprises: From Restoration to Reinterpretation, From Imagery to Immersive Realms, From Interaction to Resonance, From Function to Experience, From Code to Life, and From the Visible to Re-Creation.

The books respectively explore such emerging fields as the cross-media interpretation of cultural heritage, digital art, digital interaction design, wearable and connected-product design, virtual human design, and mixed-reality applications for culture and tourism.

Through real-world technological practice, the series examines how technology is reshaping creative logic and challenging conventional assumptions. Its distinctive value can be seen in three principal areas.

A Structured Knowledge Framework

The series covers 18 specialized fields at the intersection of AI, art and design. Together, the books establish an integrated framework linking technological principles, artistic practice, sustainable development and ethical reflection.

For example, AI+: From Restoration to Reinterpretation uses the digital restoration of Dunhuang’s cultural heritage to demonstrate the multimodal application of AI in heritage conservation. This approach is closely aligned with UNESCO’s work on digital heritage.

AI+: From Interaction to Resonance focuses on interactive design and examines how AI can create emotional connections across physical and virtual environments. It also reflects the emphasis on accessibility found in the United Nations goal of building sustainable cities and communities.

A Case-Based Teaching Model

The textbooks integrate theory with practice and guide readers in mastering AI toolchains—including platforms such as Midjourney and TensorFlow—through project-based learning.

When sensors replace paintbrushes, data streams take the place of pigments and art is no longer confined to a static, two-dimensional surface, creators require an entirely new set of methods.

The series therefore provides a prototype-development framework for wearable technology. Readers can use Arduino and flexible sensors to create a piece of “interactive jewelry capable of sensing emotion,” gaining direct experience of this new creative process.

This learning-by-doing model develops more than practical technical skills. It also cultivates the commercial and strategic thinking required to move a creative concept from experimentation to real-world implementation.

A Global Perspective and Local Innovation

The series responds to the growing trend of glocalization by connecting China’s cultural traditions with the frontiers of international digital art.

For example, AI+: From the Visible to Re-Creation takes the Fujian tulou—China’s traditional communal earthen buildings—as its subject and explores how AI can renew the contemporary relevance of historic districts. This closely reflects the goal of using technology to enrich cultural experiences, as advocated in international smart-tourism initiatives.

Conclusion: The Ultimate Value of Technology Lies Not in Its Power, but in How We Use It

The New Logic of Artificial Intelligence in Art and Design series is more than an academic guide to art and design. It is a collective call to action for the future of AI.

The theories and practices presented in the first six textbooks are, at their core, human experiments in exploring the potential of technology. Opening these books does not merely begin a journey through technological innovation. It also initiates an intellectual adventure centered on one of the most enduring questions of civilization: What is art for?

The ultimate value of technology lies not in how powerful it becomes, but in how we use it to examine human nature, express emotion and create meaning.
